Join our social walking cricket group for enthusiasts aged 55 and above. No experience needed!

We are truly a social group that welcomes men and women (as well as gender-neutral) players of all experience levels, aged 55 and above.

Many of our members had never played cricket before and we range in age from late 50s to mid-80s!

Highbridge Walking Cricket

Where do we play? What's it like?

We meet every Thursday between 1000 and 1200 at Highbridge YMCA. Your first session is free and it's just £3 a session after that.

It's a very safe, encouraging environment - a great way for us older people to exercise, discover new friendships, form a community, as well as get a chance to re-live our cricketing dreams or be introduced to the sport for the first time.

The game is played indoors with a softer ball with no running involved for fielders, batters or bowlers. Underarm bowling is allowed and we play a game of safe, indoor cricket either as individuals, pairs or teams. Everything is provided - you just bring yourself and £3 in cash!

We always start with a few gentle warm-up exercises to get us in the swing, then everyone gets a chance to bat, bowl and field!

Early 2024 saw the culmination of the inaugural Somerset Cricket Foundation Walking Cricket league - we at Highbridge Walking Cricket were the proud (and somewhat surprised!) winners!!!

Here, Mus Shaikh of Somerset Cricket Foundation presents the splendid cup to our skipper, Mark Berry.

If you'd like to hear Mus and Mark talking Walking Cricket with Elliot Darby of BBC Somerset, click the button below to be taken to BBC Sounds - press play and move the cursor to 38 minutes into the show!

Walking Cricket in Somerset

Highbridge Walking Cricket is one of seven walking cricket hubs already established throughout Somerset - the others are in Clevedon, Minehead, Taunton, Wellington, Weston-super-Mare and Yeovil.

Organised and supported by Somerset Cricket Foundation, walking cricket has really taken off in the last two or three years, with Mus Shaikh at SCF the leading light, alongside Steve Gass and a host of volunteers.

If you'd like to find out more about playing walking cricket, your first port of call is Mus - he'll tell you about it, get you registered and introduce you to us or another Walking Cricket Hub near you. Come along and give it a try!
